MEDICAID

Congress will ultimately need to pass a final budget that could devastate Medicaid, cutting as much as $880 billion, and putting essential care at risk for people with ME and many other communities. We can’t let this happen. We need your help to save Medicaid!

We must keep the pressure on! Call your Senators and Representatives now and tell them NOT to cut Medicaid in the final budget. Call now using your easy script!
TAKE ACTION ON MEDICAID ORGANIZED BY ENERGY EXPENDITURE

Remember to Stop, Rest, Pace.
These actions are aimed at Congress. Congressional staff keep track of the number of calls and emails they receive asking the Representative to oppose or support issues! If you are unable to take an action but have a trusted caregiver or friend who is willing to help you, please share this toolkit with them.
LEVEL 0: Empty battery!
Self-care and rest are acts of resistance. Stay with us. Join in if and when your body safely allows. You are important! Your continued existence is critical.

LEVEL 1: Share or interact with posts on social media that are sharing these actions or telling stories. (Lightest exertion)

Many Disability organizations are sharing actions right now. Please share any posts by #MEAction about this issue as well. Ask your networks to join in!

LEVEL 2: Email your senators and house representative

Use current actions offered by the following orgs.
-
Write your own email. Find your members of Congress here.

LEVEL 3: Call your Senators/House Members

-
Find your congressperson here. It will have their DC phone numbers but you can look for their local office numbers as well.
• Call your Senators and tell them NOT to cut Medicaid in the budget.
• Call your House Member with the same message as the vote will eventually swing back. (This is especially important if they are on the House Energy & Commerce Committee, as this committee will provide instructions on how to make cuts to the bill. Check to see if your Member is on that committee here.)

Use this call script:
HERE'S WHAT TO SAY

"Hello, my name is [NAME]. I'm a constituent from [STREET NAME in CITY/TOWN, ZIP CODE]. I'm calling to urge [SENATOR / REP’S NAME] to oppose the massive cuts to Medicaid in the House Budget Resolution. Please don’t support any cuts to Medicaid. [Provide any personal details about your experience with Medicaid, if applicable.] Thank you."

*IF LEAVING VOICEMAIL: Please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied.

LEVEL 4: Share your story

From Caring Across Generations toolkit:
Your story is powerful, and storytelling is the most effective way to move Members of Congress who are considering cuts and harms to Medicaid and other care programs. You can make it personal, be specific, and focus on what Medicaid means to your life and the lives of your loved ones. Does it mean you get the support you need to stay in your home? Does it mean you have coverage for your health care needs and provide you access to treatment? Does Medicaid cover your parents’ home care? Don’t be afraid to be emotional about how hard it is to give and receive care because of our patchwork system, and how much worse it would be if Medicaid was cut.
You can share these stories on social media, with your Congressional representatives, to your state representatives and Governor, and in local press, through op-eds, letters to the editor, and interviews with reporters interested in health care and care broadly.

LEVEL 5: Make a visit to your local Congressional offices. (Highest exertion)

Instructions to request a visit from Caring Across Generations toolkit:
To set up a meeting with staff for your representatives, check who your federal representatives are at Congress.gov by putting in your address. You can either ask for a meeting over email or over the phone!
Here’s a sample script to request a meeting:

Hi! My name is [NAME], and I’m a constituent of [CONGRESSPERSON or SENATOR] from [TOWN or CITY]. As your constituent, I am deeply concerned about the reporting that some members of Congress are considering making cuts to Medicaid. I would like to talk to the office about why Medicaid is a crucial part of my life.
Is there a time that would be good for a Health staff member to meet with me?
Thank you,
[YOUR NAME, CITY or TOWN]
